Publishing Costs Explained

  • by

Many first time authors have a very romantic notion about publishing.  They think that once you write it, then the royalties just start coming in. That isn’t often the case.

The sad reality is that people read books that others are reading, not necessarily books that are good books.  As a result, celebrities, politicians, and other very influential individuals will often have thousands of book sales immediately.  Other authors, not so much.

In the publishing world, getting a book out there requires quality formatting, design, editing, and registering it correctly with ISBN numbers, Library of Congress, etc.  This costs quite a bit to do right.  Traditional publishers will only take on those costs when they are sure the book will sell enough copies to make it worth their while – often several thousand copies.

Self-Publishers will go the other direction, and allow the author to pay the full cost, including their profit.  They may quote you a low price to start with, but by the time you finish tallying up the final total, you will have paid thousands to get your book finished and ready for purchase.

McKinney Publishing has decided to go another route.  We help authors with books that are good books, deserving of publication, and will use our connections and resources to make it happen – with a very professional product.  In order to make the process very simple, and more affordable, we ask our authors to pay $999 out of the total cost of publication.  The authors are capped at that point. That’s right, no hidden added fees or costs that will crop up as we go along. By sharing the costs of publication, McKinney Publishing helps bring a professional product within reach for the average author.

In exchange for providing these services at a low cost, McKinney Publishing will require 20% of the royalty profits that the book may generate.  (The author still keeps the other 80%).  In that way, if the book does turn out to be a best seller, then we can both profit nicely from it. That profit will subsidize McKinney Publishing Direct, which is a program that helps authors who don’t have the financial means to get good books out there for the public to read.

Our process is clear, simple, and transparent. We work to help our authors to be successful, and make publishing a process that can be fully enjoyed!
